ER Visit Cost in Orlando, FL

An emergency department (ER) visit is an evaluation performed in a hospital's emergency department, where a clinician assesses a patient and the facility provides a treatment room, equipment, and nursing and support staff. The facility fee is the charge the hospital bills for those resources; physician and professional fees are billed separately. Visits are classified into levels by the intensity of resources used. Three billing codes cover this range: HCPCS 99283 (Level 3, moderate), 99284 (Level 4, high/urgent), and 99285 (Level 5, critical). Prices on this page come from the hospital price transparency files that CMS requires hospitals to publish.

What These Prices Mean

Understanding the price columns The gross charge is the hospital's full list price, also called the chargemaster price. The cash price is what an uninsured or self-pay patient is quoted. The insured range shows the lowest and highest negotiated rates with insurers. For Level 3 (99283), AdventHealth Orlando lists a gross charge and cash price of $1,455, with an insured range of $285.06 to $755.42. UF Health Leesburg lists a gross charge of $3,033 and a cash price of $1,668.15, which is 55% of gross. Its discount is larger in percentage terms, yet its cash price is still higher than AdventHealth Orlando's, because it starts from a higher gross charge. Patients on high-deductible plans who have not met their deductible owe the negotiated rate, not the gross charge. How the three codes differ The codes reflect the complexity of the visit and the resources used. At UF Health Leesburg, cash prices rise from $1,668.15 (Level 3) to $2,110.35 (Level 4), a difference of $442.20, and to $2,498.10 (Level 5), another $387.75. At AdventHealth Orlando, Level 4 is $3,392 and Level 5 is $6,054, a gap of $2,662.

Why ER Visit Prices Vary

Hospital pricing structures Gross charges for Level 3 visits run from $1,455 at AdventHealth Orlando to $6,239 at UCF Lake Nona, a gap of $4,784. Cash prices for the same code span $1,455 to $6,239 as well, because most hospitals in this dataset set cash equal to gross. The exception is UF Health, where cash is 55% of gross at both Leesburg and The Villages. That discount narrows the gap at the lower end: UF Health's $1,668.15 Level 3 cash price is far below its $3,033 gross charge. Hospitals with a 100% cash-to-gross ratio, including all HCA Florida facilities in this dataset, offer no cash discount in the published data. Facility type and alternatives The dataset includes community hospitals, a children's hospital, and a university-affiliated hospital. Cash prices across all codes range from $1,455 to $16,661, the latter being the Level 5 price at HCA Poinciana. Freestanding or outpatient facilities are not included in this dataset and may bill differently, as may urgent care centers, which use different billing structures.

Paying cash? Health insurance could lower your ER Visit cost.

Published cash prices on this page range from $1,455 to $16,661 (including hospitals that publish cash equal to gross charge, marked with * in the table). The lowest insured rate in the price table is $70.30 (HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital). Insured rates depend on the plan, and the lowest are often Medicaid, CHIP or Medicare Advantage plans, so they may not reflect what a commercial or marketplace plan pays. If you are uninsured, a marketplace health plan could reduce your out-of-pocket cost for this procedure.

What to Do With These ER Visit Prices

Match the bill to the codes. After the visit, look for 99283, 99284 or 99285 on the hospital bill. The level is set afterward based on the care given, so nobody can choose it in advance. Ask the billing office which code was used and why, and ask for an itemized statement listing every test, image and medication as its own line.

Weigh the hospital bill against this page. At AdventHealth Orlando, the 99283 cash price is $1,455 while insured rates for that code run up to $755.42. Eight of the ten hospitals here list cash equal to gross, so a full-price cash bill is common. UF Health Leesburg Hospital is different: its 99283 cash price is $1,668.15, below its gross charge.

Sort out who billed you. The prices on this page are hospital facility charges only. Check these separately:

  • The hospital's facility fee for the visit
  • The ER physician, who often bills on a separate statement
  • Any radiologist or lab bills for tests and imaging

Ask each sender for its own itemized bill and billing code.

Blanks and zeros. Every cash price on this page is published, and no gross charge is missing. If a figure you find elsewhere shows $0 or is blank, treat it as missing data, not a free service.

Financial assistance and discounts. Nonprofit hospitals are required to publish a financial assistance policy, and the billing office can send it with an application. Some hospitals also offer prompt-pay or self-pay discounts; these vary by hospital and are not included in this data. Assistance applications and discount requests can be made after the visit.

What Patients Ask About ER Visit Costs

How much does a er visit cost without insurance in Orlando?

Cash prices for Level 3 (99283) range from $1,455 at AdventHealth Orlando to $6,239 at UCF Lake Nona. Level 4 (99284) ranges from $2,110.35 at UF Health Leesburg and The Villages to $9,748.19 at UCF Lake Nona. Level 5 (99285) ranges from $2,498.10 at UF Health to $16,661 at HCA Poinciana. Across all codes and hospitals, cash prices run from $1,455 to $16,661. Level 4 costs more than Level 3 at every hospital, and Level 5 costs more than Level 4. These are facility fees; physician and professional fees are billed separately and are not included in these figures.

Why is the gross charge so much higher than the cash price?

The gross charge, or chargemaster price, is a hospital's full list price before any discounts. Almost no one pays it, since insurers negotiate lower rates and many hospitals offer lower self-pay prices. At UF Health Leesburg, the Level 3 cash price of $1,668.15 is 55% of the $3,033 gross charge. At AdventHealth Orlando, cash equals gross at $1,455, a ratio of 100%. UF Health's larger percentage discount still produces a higher cash price than AdventHealth Orlando's, because the starting gross charge is more than double.

Does insurance cover a er visit?

Coverage depends on the plan, the network status of the hospital, and whether the visit meets the plan's medical necessity criteria. Negotiated rates vary widely: Level 3 payer rates range from $70.30 to $6,046 across 749 published rates, an 86x spread. Prior authorization requirements generally apply to non-emergency services; emergency visits are handled under separate plan rules. If you are on a high-deductible plan and have not met your deductible, you owe the negotiated rate for the visit, not the gross charge, until the deductible is satisfied.

Are there additional fees beyond the er visit facility charge?

Yes. The prices listed here are facility fees, which cover the hospital's room, equipment, and staff. The emergency physician who evaluates and treats a patient typically bills a separate professional fee. Additional services during a visit, such as imaging, laboratory tests, procedures, or medications, are also billed separately from the visit-level facility charge, and interpretation of imaging by a radiologist is billed as its own professional fee. Ambulance transport, if used, is billed by the transport provider. Dollar amounts for these separate charges are not included in the source data.

What is the cash price for a level 3 ER visit at AdventHealth Orlando?

AdventHealth Orlando publishes a cash price of $1,455 for ER Visit Level 3 (99283), the same as its gross charge, so no self-pay discount is published. This is a facility charge only. Its published insured rates for the same code run from $285.06 to $755.42.

What are the lowest and highest ER visit prices at Orlando hospitals?

On this page, prices run from $1,455 at AdventHealth Orlando (99283) to $16,661 at HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital (99285). The highest is about 11x the lowest. Both are facility charges only and do not include physician or other separate bills. All 30 price rows have a published cash price.

Which Orlando area hospitals offer a discounted self-pay price on ER visits?

Only UF Health Leesburg Hospital and UF Health The Villages Hospital publish a self-pay price below gross charge, at 55% of gross. For example, ER Visit Level 3 (99283) is $1,668.15 against a $3,033 gross charge. The other 8 of 10 hospitals publish cash equal to gross. These are facility charges only.

How much does Florida Blue pay for an ER visit in Orlando?

Florida Blue's published rates for ER visits in Orlando range from $111.93 at UF Health Leesburg Hospital to $6,146 at UCF Lake Nona Hospital. The median is $2,317.99 across 10 hospitals, and the highest is about 55x the lowest. These are facility rates only, and actual billing can differ by plan.

Why do the rates for a level 5 ER visit at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital vary so widely?

HCA Florida Osceola Hospital lists 171 payer rates for ER Visit Level 5 (99285), from $190 for CorVel Corporation (workers' compensation) up to $13,879.80 for NovaNet. The highest is about 73x the lowest. Rates differ by payer and plan type, and each figure covers the facility charge only.
